The final day of the Elgar Festival in Worcester was a full one for Elgar Society members. It began with a superb A.T. Shaw Lecture, delivered by composer and broadcaster Michael Berkeley together with conductor Kenneth Woods This was followed with an excellent lunch in the splendid surroundings of the Royal Worcester Porcelain Museum after which a chamber concert in the Henry Sandon Hall featured Elgar’s String Quartet in a powerful performance given by members of the English String Orchestra.
Evensong in Worcester Cathedral was followed by the traditional laying of the chaplet at the Gerontius window, by Vice-Chairman, Martyn Marsh.
Happily, the weather was kind and so we were able to bring the day to close with the Elgar toast in the garden of The Firs, Birthplace of Edward Elgar.
