HMV Worcester honours Sir Edward Elgar
May 3, 2014

Elgar’s association with HMV goes back to the early days of recorded sound and has been brought right up to date in its Worcester branch with the unveiling of a mural depicting Sir Edward listening in through a pair of earphones.

Store manager Lindsay says “we’re very proud to play host to this fantastic Elgar mural at HMV Worcester. When we decided to give our store a lick of paint I contacted street artists Lee Morris and Tom Brown, because I knew they had already painted Elgar locally in Malvern. I wanted to make the connection between Worcester’s most famous composer and the fact that he opened the very first HMV on Oxford Street in 1921. I’ve worked at HMVv for twenty years and I’m very proud of our heritage. Elgar is wearing contemporary headphones in our mural, which seems so appropriate given the way in which he embraced technology, playing an important role in the use and development of gramophones. The painting took the artists many hours of preparation as it’s enormous. We have already received many positive comments from customers. I hope his fans appreciate the picture and that it remains a talking point among music fans for many years to come.”
